What is Net Neutrality?

What is Net Neutrality?

Well, Net Neutrality is a concept that basically deals with the idea of treating all data available on the internet with equality which means that the Internet Service Providers can't intentionally block, slow down, charge money or discriminate any user based on the quality or quantity of information available on specific websites, platform or any application based on type of attached equipment, content or method of communication.

Technical and Service Network Neutrality

Technical and service network neutrality is basically a simple concept which says that the operation of a service at a layer shall not be influenced by any data other than the data that are interpreted at that layer and that should follow a strict protocol specified in that layer.

Open Internet

It is basically a kind of decentralization of technological power where any individuals, companies or organizations can easily access to the internet with full resources and can operate on it. It can also be seen as a open source software where the users are provided access to the codes that runs the program so that they can improve the software or fix bugs.

Traffic Shaping

Traffic Shaping is a simple concept which mainly focuses on the control of computer network traffic by optimizing performance, improving latency and increase bandwidth by delaying a controlled information and user data, which is also known as payload i.e. the actual intended message. Traffic shaping basically means controlling the quantity of data sent to a network and the maximum rate (or rate limiting) at which the traffic is sent.

What are the Pros?

1. Creates equality

This means the Internet Service Providers can't really do much about the accessibility of users based on the mechanisms through which they want. Companies like AT&T or Comcast wouldn't be able to manipulate the customers accessibility to certain websites or applications.

2. Provides freedom of expression

Any websites or services that can operate legally can do so and be available. Net neutrality has given us the freedom to immediately report to the law enforcement officials regarding any information which seems to be illegal or inappropriate. Without this freedom of expression it would become easier for illegal content like child pornography to be available on the internet.

What are the Cons?

1. Limits infrastructure improvements

There are some high level users who consumes a huge amount of bandwidth for their internet usage. If they are asked to pay the money it could indirectly affect the ISPs in a positive manner. They can use this added income to upgrade their infrastructure, making it possible for advanced fiber networks to be installed in many communities.

2. Reduce the consumption of other users' data allotments

This has been a possibility since some mobile telecom operators may provide free internet access to some contents. Those who do not have data contracts on their smartphones will be enabled to surf some areas of the internet for free. This would reduce the consumption of other users' data allotments.

Personally, I feel that this topic is very much debatable  and it may continue as well. We need to consider each key point carefully and debate or discuss together so that we can come up with a reasonable solution that would benefit all of us.

‘The Future of India’

I have read Swami Vivekananda’s idea of ‘The Future of India’. Here I have penned down my personal thoughts after reading a few other articles and opinions which are almost in line with Swamiji’s thoughts with slight modifications. At some places in this article I did not complete Swamiji’s ideas because I have consciously thought that the same idea could be expanded without making any changes to the essence of the idea as it could possibly which could pass a more inclusive message to the society where we all live. I think that the need of the hour is to follow Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s ideas for India. I have envisioned my idea of the future of India here in line with Swami Vivekananda’a ideas of ‘The Future of India’. I am always open to a new idea but it should be an organized and structured thought. This could be in the form a constructive criticism or a discussion as well. Kindly read below and try to understand the thought process behind each ...

When did you know you wanted to become a writer?

Part :2 A fter coming to Kolkata I didn't quite focus on my writing. To be honest I lost that vibe completely. It was only after my first year of engineering that I wrote a blog. That was a personal blog where I had shared my feelings concerning some deplorable events that happened in my life earlier. Later, I modified it into a tech blog because after some time I became interested in technological kinds of stuff. Fortunately, I had a friend in my PG and he was quite a techie. So, in a way, I was also drawn towards technology. Another year had passed. There was some break at that point from blogging. I felt too lazy to think about something interesting or different from myself. Soon I was in my final year of engineering and I got interested in blogging once again and this time with technological topics because I used to follow some tech videos on YouTube and that helped me a lot with the contents. I thought of a plan about starting a technological blog and turning it into...

Facebook is rolling out a new feature that'll show you strangers' posts

T he new feature is called "Latest Conversations" and was spotted by Tech Crunch. It's one of Facebook's attempts to dead set on breaking our news biases and expand our horizons by this feature which will show you posts from strangers. So, after searching a news topic, Facebook will now display a public user generated posts which are outside your user network and there you will be able to see the number of people engaging with the topic. The "Latest Conversations" shows up beneath the news and photos section when you search something on Facebook. It is capable of arousing a certain amount of curiosity by giving a nice touch to see the number of people in the conversation, which means the rise and fall. It's like seeing a trend rise and fall if you sit long enough to watch before your eyes. However, not all the posts will make sense to you. As of now, there is no filter system added to the feature. So, we might end seeing up posts written in other l...
